A Brief History of the Club

Firside Athletic was formed in 1989 by a group of parents of some young lads in the Hellesdon area, and with support of Firside Junior school for the developing team for a base for training and match days. It was now possible to enter the Norfolk Youth League having the correct criteria and personnel.

Firside Athletic YFC’s name came about in recognition of the support from Firside Junior school . Without it, it would not have been possible to get established. That sentiment is true today 45 years later.

The FA’s  Charter Standard Club initiative was adopted by Firside Athletic YFC in 2002 and was one of the first in Norfolk to do so, led by the Firside Chairman Nigel Alderton who believed in what the Charter was trying to achieve in bringing in standards for the whole areas of running a club, coaching, team management, first aid, parental support, Club Constitution guidelines and many other areas of youth club football development.

With the Charter endorsement and the club’s ambition to grow we achieved a full turnout of age groups and a Junior Soccer Club on Saturday mornings with Steve Stanton guiding the youngsters from 5 years old the soccer skills they seek.

In 2005/6 we set up Firside Foxes for girls which proved a great asset to the club. So by the end 2009 we had a very sizeable club with nearly twenty teams. This put a big strain on the club for match days and training but with the support of Hellesdon Parish Recreation ground and CEYMS Sports Ground at Swardeston we were able fulfil our League fixtures and training schedules.

Firside YFC had very strong links to CEYMS where young players were able to go after there time at Firside. CEYMS was also the venue for many a Firside summer tournament with excellent playing fields.

Mick Duffin took over as Chairman in 2013 with Nicky his wife supporting the club as Child Welfare office and later General Secretary, both Mick & Nicky stood down at the end of the 2023/4 season with Tim Blanch and Tim Noel taking on the Chairman and General Secretary roles respectively.
